Accompanying the opening of the Port of Hakodate to international trade at the end of the Edo Period (1603-1868), the Goryokaku Magistrate's Office was constructed at the center of Goryokaku Fort by the Edo Shogunate as the base of government operations in Hokkaido. The office was decommisioned and dismantled by the Hokkaido Exploitation Agency in 1871 when the center of Hokkaido government was moved to Sapporo. As the result of excavation surveys, the office was restored at its original site in 2010. The building reenacts the style of the Edo Period architecture and is an important structure that reflects Hakodate at the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
