The Hakodate Botanical Garden's greenhouse utilizes thermal heat from the Yunokawa hot spring to grow and maintain its 3000-tree garden representing 300 varieties. In addition to tropical varieties, including palms and orchids, the garden also has rarely-seen species such as the Cherimoya (ice cream tree) and breadfruit tree. The garden also houses raccoon and Japanese monkey. In the wintertime, vistors can enjoy the somewhat bizzare sight of Japanese monkeys taking a pleasurable dip in the Yunokawa hot spring.
