The Northern History Museum focuses on the extraordinary track record of Takataya Kahee in the development of Hakodate and the North Pacific fishing industry. Museum displays include antique documents telling the tale of the Takataya family, resource materials on the development of Hokkaido and other northern territories, documents that lead to the resolution of the Golownin Incident and the signing of a peace treaty following the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), as well as around 500 of Kahee's personal items. The enormous collection of works allows patrons to trace the life and times of Kahee and the history of the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
