Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine was built using the rarely-seen Imperial yatsumune-zukuri style in which the worship hall and main sanctuary are interconnected under the same roof in the shape of an H. Once at the top of the 134-step stone staircase extending from the entrance, visitors are greeted by the traditional architecture of the shrine and Mount Hakodate, with its unique seasonal flair. A Tsuruwaka Inari Shrine, with its red torii gate, is located on the shrine grounds as well, while various worshiped plaques also decorate the area. The Annual Festival of Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine held in August during Obon enlivens visitors with the spirited running of the main mikoshi (portable shrine) up the shrine's stone stairway.
