Koryu-ji Temple is the oldest temple in Hakodate. The Sanmon Gate showcases extraordinary carvings made entirely from Japanese zelkova trees, while this and other temple buildings are important wooden structures dating from the end of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). A painting of the Buddha in Nirvana, designated a tangible cultural property by the Hokkaido government, is preserved in the temple. The large ginkgo trees located outside the main gate and inside the temple grounds put on a dazzling and huge display of exotic fall colors in the autumn. With its unique architecture and important cultural properties, the temple is a popular and highly-visited destination for both tourism and worshiping.
