The Hakodate Episcopal Church was constructed in 1878 as the first Episcopal church in Hokkaido. The church was lost to fire on several occasions, but was rebuilt at its current location in 1921. The church building was designed in a way that it resembles a cross when seen from above. The view from the church includes the natural vista of Mount Hakodate to the back and the panorama of Hakodate Bay and downtown Hakodate to the front. When illuminated at night, the church creates an aura of fantasy to the Motomachi District nightscape.
