Visitors to the Hakodate Museum of Art, Hokkaido, which opened in September 1986 as the center of art and culture in Hakodate as well as the Donan Region, are greeted at the entrance by a large nude statue made by noted French artist Antoine Bourdelle. Museum displays include a broad mix of artistic medium, including paintings, sculptures, literary works, pottery and ceramics, while the permanent display area showcases the works of local Hakodate and Donan Region artists, including Miematsu Tanabe and Otei Kaneko.
