The Old Toi Railway was a 29-km military supply line planned during the second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) to run from Goryokaku on the Hakodate Main Line to Toi Town. Construction was halted due to a lack of materials, and with only 2.8 km left to complete, the line became a dead track that was never used. As a result, the track is sometimes referred to as the 「phantom railway.」 The arch bridge, constructed using wood-reinforced concrete, resembles a Roman aqueduct and has received high distinction as a modern civil engineering heritage site.
