The word 「todohokke」 means 「shadow of the cape」 in Ainu. The waters near Cape Esan are known as a treasure trove of salmon, arabesque greenling and kelp, as fishing in the area has been an important industry from ancient times. With its fine white sand, Todohokke Choshi Beach is known as one of the best surfing beaches in the Donan Region, playing host to national surfing competitions annually. Surrounded by a diverse and rich natural environment, the beach's beautiful scenery has been used a number of times as a filming location for movies.
