Gokokujinjazaka Avenue extends 440 meters up to Gokoku Shrine, and is used primarily to access Hakodate Park and Mount Hakodate. A stone monument marking the entrance to Mount Hakodate can be found on the avenue at the foot of the mountain, while a bronze statue of Takataya Kahee, the forerunner of Hakodate commerce, can be found in the nearby greenbelt overlooking the city. The top of the hill is location of large Torii gates marking the entrance to Gokoku Shrine, from which the avenue was named. Looking back from the entrance of the shrine provides sweeping views of downtown Hakodate and Omori-hama Beach and the Tsugaru Straits.
