Yachizaka Avenue is a 190-meter long street that runs perpendicular to the streetcar-served Road. The avenue, located halfway up the hill toward Mount Hakodate, offers an easily-walkable gentle slope. Although the location and character of avenues later developed primarily for tourism, such as Hachimanzaka, have greatly changed with the development of the area following the Great Hakodate Fire, Yachizaka Avenue remains largely unchanged from the Edo Period (1603-1868) and continues to be closely connected to the daily lives of the local community. The name Yachizaka originated from the fact that the street was once primarily used as a shortcut to the pleasure quarters of Yachigashira-cho.
