The Kanchu Misogi Festival is a traditional Shinto festival held since 1831 that prays for a strong grain harvest and bountiful fishing season. The ceremony begins by four youth wearing loinclothes from the surrounding community in Samegawa Shrine to purify their bodies in cold water both day and night. After the purification has been completed, the youth carry the Go-shintai (object of worship in which the shrine deity resides) and dive into the Tsugaru Straits to wash and purify it. Coinciding with this ceremony, the Misogi Open Area of the shrine also hosts a variety of other events, including mochi-maki (rice cake rolling), historical play and Misogi product fair.
