The Hakodate Shindo Expressway, provisionally opened in 2001, spans 20.2 kilometers linking Kikyo Town of Hakodate with the Onuma area of Nanae Town. The road's official name is National Route 5 Hakodate Shindo Expressway. The expressway has successfully reduced congestion and shortened driving times and is widely used by city residents and tourists alike. The expressway offers panoramic views along the way of Mt. Hakodate and downtown, while at night it provides a unique vantage point for the area's nightscape.
