Goryokaku Fort, constructed in 1864 as a base of operations for the northern security force, represents Japan\'s first-ever Western-style fort. The fort was named Goryokaku because of its five 「go」 bastions 「ryo」, which form a star shape when seen from above. The fort was also site of Japan\'s last civil strife, the Battle of Hakodate. Today the area of the fort inward from the moat is a park, which has become a major springtime draw of tourists and city residents alike for walks among and flower viewing of its nearly 1600 cherry trees.
