The Hakodate Winter Lights, part of the Hakodate Winter Festival, decorates the Motomachi District, site of churches and numerous historical buildings, in a 50,000-bulb display of beautiful winter lights nightly. The trees lining the hilly avenues in the area, major tourist destinations in themselves, are also decorated in winter lights, filling the air with an almost magical ambience. The beautiful sight of the illuminated Old Hakodate Public Hall looking up from the bottom of Motoizaka Avenue is also quite memorable, adding a touch of light to the historical townscape.
