Hakodate Station, widely used as a major gateway to Hokkaido since rail operations began in 1902, is the departure and terminus station on the Hakodate Main Line. The fifth generation station building, opened in 2003, is a glass-walled, modern design, with many open areas and high interior ceiling. Due to its close proximity to the Hakodate Morning Market, Mashumaru Aomori-Hakodate Ferry Commemorative Museum, and the bay area, the station is often crowded with city residents and tourists.
