The Old Hakodate Public Hall, designated a national important cultural property, is a Western-style wooden building dating from the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Still decorated with many of its glamorous furniture and furnishings from the past, the interior exudes a sense of elegance. The second floor great hall, once the site of ballroom dances, is used today as a concert hall because of its great acoustics and stage, while the hall's balcony offers sweeping views of the Port of Hakodate and downtown.
