The original building that would later house the Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples was first constructed as the old Hakodate Branch of the Bank of Japan. This building burned down and was rebuilt several times, but in 1950 the building was expanded to its current form. The museum became its tenant starting in 1989. The three-floor elegantly styled building, facing Motoizaka Avenue, has distinct boxed-shaped pillars bordering its doors. The view looking toward the top of the avenue's hill include upclose vistas of Mount Hakodate and Motomachi Park.
