The Hakodate Orthodox Church, constructed in 1858 as an attached church to the Russian Consulate, is Japan's oldest Greek Orthodox church. Facing the steep slope of Chacha-nobori Avenue, the church represents a Russian-inspired Byzantine-style architecture as illustrated by its beautifully contoured window frames and contrasting white and green colors. The view from behind the church includes the ocean framed by the church's architecture. The church has become a popular tourist spot in the Motomachi District.
