Tokiwazaka Avenue was named after a large stout pine tree called ｢Tokiwa no matsu｣ found at the hilltop mansion. The Tachikawa Residence and Yamauchi Residence, both Hakodate city-designated historical buildings, are located at the start of the avenue near the harbor. Tokiwazaka Avenue is filled with lush greenery in spring and the dazzling fall colors of Japanese rowan in autumn. The avenue also offers views of Hakodate Bay and Hakodate-maru, Japan's first-ever Western sailing ship on display at the city pier.
