Chacha-nobori Avenue was named after the Ainu word 「chacha」 which means grandfather. This word was used because the slope is so sharp that the site of people leaning forward and bending at the waist just to climb the avenue resembled the posture of an elderly gentleman. Hakodate's three largest churches, Motomachi District's most famous landmarks, and western-style mansions line the cobblestone street, setting a backdrop for sweeping bay views. In the evening, visitors can enjoy a magnificent night view of the city.
