Daisanzaka, one of Hakodate's more well known avenues, was selected as one of Japan's top 100. The name Daisanzaka originates from an old lodging once located at the entrance to the avenue that operated under the name Daisan. The avenue has beautifully laid out cobblestone and rows of trees lining the street, while its many historical buildings and churches provide a unique cultural ambience. The avenues street lights, modeled after gas lights of yesteryear, exude an air of romanticism.
