The Hakodate Seaside Marine Institute, located on the same site as the since-demolished Hakodate West Police Precinct, opened in 2007 in a new building that reconstructs perfectly the exterior of the historical police precinct. The research laboratory works to research marine ecology and marine fisheries as well as develop new marine food products. In addition to the research laboratory, which city residents and tourists can observe through a glass wall, the facility also has a memorial hall and lounge. The building features exterior lighting at night, showcasing a completely different face from the daytime.
