Opened in 2007, the Hakodate Community Design Center reuses a 1923-era building that once housed the former Hakodate branch of the Marui Imai clothing store. Today, the building continues to use many of its historical facilities, including a 70 year old hand-operated elevator. The unique building marked by its dome and tower retains both a sense of boldness and the sublime. The building is known for its dazzling sight when lit-up at night. The community center is widely used by city residents and tourists alike for its dissemination of local and tourism-related information.
