Gokoku Shrine, located at the top of Gokujinjazaka Avenue, enshrines the spirits of those who lost their lives during war. The climb to the top of the hill is well worth the effort, as visitors are greated by the rich natural surroundings of the shrine grounds and Mount Hakodate after passing under the large red torii gate at the entrance. The shrine grounds, wrapped in tranquility and stately ambience, provide a distinct depth and flavor unique to Gokoku Shrine. Many people visit the shrine not only for worship, but for flower viewing in the spring and fall foliage in the autumn.
