The Funami Branch was built in 1904 to manage the cemetery of the Hakodate Annex of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. A large-scale renovation gave birth to the current building in 1926. Passing under the large temple gate, characterized by its tiled roof, vistors will find a wooden purification basin (used for washing hands prior to entering the temple) and stone stupa. The temple is known for having a number of graves of important historical figures instrumental to the development of Hakodate from the end of the Edo Period (1603-1868) to the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Much like the Hakodate Annex, the historically-rich Funami Branch continues to be well maintained today.
