The Motomachi Roman Catholic Church is easily identifiable by the weathercock atop its Gothic-style hexagonal roof. First contructed in 1876, the church was lost to fire and rebuilt on several occasions. The church again burned down in 1924, but was rebuilt in its current form shortly thereafter using the remaining brick walls that survived the fire. The church's extravagant altar, a condolence gift from Pope Benedict XV, is the only of its kind in Japan and is open to the public outsie of church services.
