Onuma Quasi National Park was the first in Hokkaido to be designated a quasi national park in 1958. The lake in the park has 126 islands with 18 bridges connecting walking paths to these islands. The wetland area contains an expanse of broad-leafed trees and plants and is the habitat of numerous bird species and other small animals. The park is a major year-round leisure destination, with fishing, canoeing, and horse riding activities as well as Japanese smelt fishing and cross-country ice skiing in the winter months.
